Saturday-Sunday May 8-9, 2004

Well, today started out very badly, I missed a turn and went the wrong way for about five miles - including one of the worst hills I've encountered on the walk. I was not in a very good frame of mind.

Fortunately, the cell phones were working and Travis rescued me about a half hour later.

So I spent the past week building a five mile cushion and it was gone with one missed turn.

On the other hand, the people here are so great, it makes you forget your woes. More people offered rides again on Saturday and Sunday. One was a car full of teens. Ok, maybe early 20's, it's hard for us old folks to tell. Everybody under 40 looks like a kid!

One family asked me to join them for a turkey dinner, but this was not too long after I got back onto "The 6" so I really didn't have time. Maybe I should have made the time.

Later, the folks at our B&B put out a cold plate for Travis and I. That was nice. It's a great inn, too. The Christmas Inn in Smethport - the same town that has the original (so they say) Christmas Store. Looks like a neat store but it was closed Sunday.

Lots and lots of hills Saturday and Sunday. I just laugh at them - on the way down. (I curse 'em on the way up). That is except for the one where I went the wrong way. I cursed up and down!

Met a real old-timer (84) sitting on his front porch whittling an axe handle. Good story.

Tomorrow we go from Hazel Hurtz to the Allegheny Forest. Getting close to the end of PA. Maybe this week, maybe next. But soon.
